petaDishoom's first ever March for Animals took place in Pune on Monday and it was a major success! We met at the boys' hostel of COEP Pune and marched from there to Sambhaji Park on Junglee Maharaja Road. During the march, which was led by Himanshu from World Alliance for Youth Empowerment (WAYE), everyone held placards and shouted slogans urging people to go vegetarian. All marchers wore T shirts provided by Staeta who also gave out free soya milk to the participants.

Everyone had a great time, and we received a lot of media coverage for the event. I'd like to take this opportunity to thank the 300 people that came out to participate—we couldn't have done this without you!

You can see pictures from the event below. And if you don't want to miss out on future events, be sure to sign up for the enews!

The College of Engineering, Pune (C.O.E.P.) is teaming up with petaDishoom for tomorrow’s March for Animals. As an early kick off to their annual technical fiesta MindSpark, we’re starting the march at COEP’s boys’ hostel ground, Shivaji Nagar.

In its first year, MindSpark was a big hit among the student fraternity. C.O.E.P. has always made it a point to be a cut above the rest, and their fest is no exception. MindSpark has always attracted the smartest brains, whether from the engineering or non-engineering fields.

MindSpark 2008 will officially begin on 2 October, and will run until 4 October, and it promises to be their biggest and best fest yet. If you’re going, don’t forget to stop by the petaDishoom stall—you know we wouldn’t miss a fest this awesome for anything!

And if you haven’t already, don’t forget to sign up for our March for Animals. It’s going to be an amazing time for helping animals!

Holding a banner which read, "KFC: Stop Terrorising Chickens", a giant crippled "chicken", sitting on a wheel chair with bandages draped on his body, crossed the road in front of a Bangalore KFC on Wednesday, 10 September, to protest against the company's abusive treatment of chickens. Activists distributed leaflets to passer by and briefed the media on how birds are drugged and bred to grow so large that many become crippled from the weight of their massive upper bodies – many can't even walk because of leg deformities. Millions of birds are scalded to death in defeathering tanks, and video footage from an undercover investigation documented that workers at a slaughterhouse in the US kicked, threw and stamped on live birds.

If you’re bored of sitting at home after heavy rain showers every day, then we highly recommend that you catch up with your best buds and check out the local hotties at these fun and animal-friendly hot spots:

Costa Coffee: One of the many "perks" of this coffee house is the fact that their dizzying array of coffees can be turned vegan for only 20 rupees, including the English toffee cappuccino or chocolaty mocha. Ooooo so yum !

Café Coffee Day: Take your taste buds on a trip to Ireland with Café Coffee Day's completely vegan, completely green "Irish coffee". If you are looking to cool down, try their "lemon demon" or strawberry-flavoured iced tea.

McDonald's: Crispy French fries smothered in ketchup, a vegan burger (without mayo or cheese but with plenty of chilli sauce), and an ice-cold Coke. Need we say more?
Subway: Fresh veggies loaded onto freshly baked wheat bread – with tangy chilli sauce, spicy mustard and must-have mint sauce – coupled with lemon iced tea makes for an extra delicious, extra healthy meal.
And don’t forget to tell us your favorite places to grab a vegan bit in the comments.

PETA’s newest brand ambassador is none other than actress Jiah Khan, who posed as an injured bird on a tree branch holding a placard reading “Cut Out Glass coated Manja, Not Wings
”

Jiah posed to speak out against against the use of glass coated manjas which injures birds during kite flying festivals like Makar Sakranti and Independence.

After the kite flying is over, this glass coated manja is left caught up in trees and electricity poles and unsuspecting birds easily get entangled in it. As they struggle to free themselves the manja digs deeper into their legs and wings. These wounds, if left untreated, often result in a slow and painful death.

This Independence Day, please don’t use glass coated Manjas for the birds’ sake!

Pamela Anderson, PETA US' honorary director, was in Canada, her home country, today. Where'd she have lunch? At a KFC with local animal rights advocates, just to sample the new faux-chicken Classic Vegetarian Sandwich!

For the past five years, Ms. Anderson has been a big part of PETA US' international campaign against KFC, whose suppliers have been responsible for some serious Kentucky Fried Cruelty. While the KFC boycott continues to rage outside Canada, the United Purchasing Group of Canada—which is responsible for coordinating the purchasing of all chickens for Canadian KFCs—entered into an agreement with PETA US to dramatically improve animal welfare standards and reduce suffering.

Yes, before you comment—we'd rather all the KFCs were all-vegan and we'd rather the whole world went vegan. But if you were a chicken with the choice of whether or not you wanted to have a wing painfully broken and be scalded to death, and PETA could help you get that relief but didn't control the whole world, I'm guessing I know which option you'd go for.

Ahhh! Fresh air, sunshine, people-watching and helping animals! That's what leafleting is all about.

We hope that you can schedule some time in the coming weeks to take part in our monthly leafleting task. Many people are unaware of the facts surrounding these issues, and the simple act of offering a leaflet can have a huge impact on thousands of animals' lives. Leafleting outside your local KFC restaurant is an effective and simple way to show people how animals are tortured and cruelly killed for the KFC bucket. All you need is a stack of leaflets and an hour to spare.

You'll be surprised at how far you can get with a friendly smile and a simple question, such as "Would you like some more information about KFC's torture of innocent chickens?" Let us know if you're interested and we'll send you everything you need to get started.

By taking part in this exciting programme – either alone or with a group of friends – you'll be joining thousands of people all over the world who are letting KFC and their customers know how animals raised for their meat are treated. If you would like to discuss other ways you can reach people to make them aware of KFC's cruelty to innocent chickens, let us know.

We'd love to hear from you about leafleting outside a local KFC outlet. We can provide you with everything you need – feel free to e-mail us at Tajinder-V@petaindia.org.

And don’t forget to sign up for the Street Team, so that you can earn free stuff while you help animals!

Al Gore admitted to an audience at a political blogger conference that he may, indeed, be bad for the environment and guilty of contributing to global warming. Why? Because he just can't seem to stop eating meat, which is more harmful to the global warming crisis .(which Gore is known for being a teeny bit fanatical about) than all of the world's cars, trucks, SUVs, and planes combined!

According to Ezra Klein at Prospect.org, [http://www.prospect.org/csnc/blogs/ezraklein_archive?month=07&year=2008&base_name=al_gore_on_meat_and_global_war] Gore said, "It is true that it would be healthier for us as individuals and as a planet if we consumed less meat. I acknowledge that. … I myself am a meat eater and maybe that's had some effect" (emphasis mine). How did he go from acknowledging that vegetarianism is better for individuals and the planet to saying that maybe his choice to eat animals has some negative effect?

Ignorance may be bliss for Al Gore, but it’s far from blissful for the animals he eats. I think he needs to read our Top Ten Reasons to Go Vegetarian. . I’d also like to encourage you to check it out and take the pledge to go veg, if you haven’t already.

The car – equipped with a sweet 450-horsepower 8.0-liter V10 engine with a top speed of more than 190 mph (wow!) – was just sold at auction in Las Vegas.

Not that it could ever be sexy to wear the skin of another animal, but it becomes even more horrific when you realize that these animals are often skinned alive for everything from shoes to handbags. They can suffer for hours, or even days, while they wait to die.

Most snakes are skinned by having their head nailed to a tree, then their bodies are slit from one end to the other with a knife—the skin is then torn off. In parts of India, snakes are skinned alive even though the killing of snakes and the export of their skins has been illegal there since 1972.

If you want to do your part to help these animals, be sure to sign up for the petaDishoom Street Team. It’s a great way to help animals—all while earning free stuff!

"It's very rewarding to see youngsters like Dhruv getting active for animals and speaking up for them", says petaDishoom's Simran Kodesia. "Young people across India are taking heed of our message that animals do have rights and deserve respect and protection."

Locally-based sand artiste Sudarshan Pattnaik made a 10-feet tall sand sculpture of a leather shoe crushing a polar bear. The sculpture included a sign that read “Your carbon footprints have leather shoes.” to highlight the environmental harm causes by the leather industry.

Check out a quote from this article about the demo:

'Leather-production facilities destroy nearby waterways and delicate eco-systems in the water resources,' PETA Campaign Manager N.G. Jayasimha told IANS.

'The energy consumed and pollution produced by the leather industry makes it a leading factor in global warming, which is endangering polar bears and their habitat,' he said.

Leather is the most important by-product of the meat industry, so it directly contributes to the cruelty in factory farms and slaughterhouses. And according to a 2006 United Nations report, raising animals for food creates more greenhouse gasses than all trucks, cars, planes, and ships in the world combined. The damage caused by India's leather industry makes our country a major contributor to global warming and the further endangerment of polar bears and their natural habitat.

So just give leather the boot in honor of World Environment Day, and help do your bit to save the environment and animals. And don’t forget to tell us where you find your favorite cruelty-free fashions by commenting below!
