Mother Earth is in trouble and what are some of us doing to save the planet besides using a different kind of light bulb?
On Earth Day, a PETA supporter showered on the pavement in Mumbai outside the Flora fountain to make the point that it takes 20,000 liters of water to produce 1 kilogram of meat, whereas it takes just 200 liters of water to produce 1 kilogram of wheat. In other words, meat is not green!
Did you also know that India is the fifth largest emitter of greenhouse gasses? UN Scientists have determined that raising animals for food generates more greenhouses-gas emissions than all the cars, trains, and planes in the world combined, and a recent report in the World Watch Magazine stated that livestock and their by-products account for at least 32.6 billion tons of carbon dioxide per year, or 51 percent of annual worldwide greenhouse gas emissions.
Raising animals for meat, eggs and dairy also pollutes the water and the air and requires massive amounts of energy and land. Going vegan is clearly the best and easiest thing any of us can do as individuals to save the planet.
Let’s not forget to be environmentalists the moment we sit down to eat. Let’s make everyday Earth Day by going vegan. Go vegan to save the Earth!
