PETA ASKS INDIA SKIPPER TO SKIP ANIMAL CRUELTY

In a letter to India Cricket Captain MS Dhoni, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals India (PETA) has condemned the captain's reported participation in a goat sacrifice during a thanksgiving ceremony in Silli temple at Ranchi.

PETA reports that its office has been flooded with calls from people across the country who are outraged by the cruel killing. In its letter to Dhoni, the group expresses concern that the cricketer's young fans might be inspired to perpetrate similar acts of cruelty and encourages the captain to use his influence to spread a message of compassion to young people.

Vegan Diet - A cure for Arthritis

Arthritis sufferers could protect themselves against heart attacks and strokes by eating a gluten-free, vegan diet, say researchers.

The specialised diet – which excludes all animal products – lowered levels of "bad" cholesterol which is linked to heart disease, a study found.

It also boosted levels of natural antibodies to fight compounds in the body that are implicated in rheumatoid arthritis.

The condition, which is distinct from the more common osteoarthritis, is a degenerative inflammatory disorder in which the body's immune system attacks joint tissues, leading to swelling, tenderness and increasing disability.

Nearly 400,000 Britons have rheumatoid arthritis, which puts them at higher risk of heart attacks and strokes.

Doctors at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm gave 30 patients with rheumatoid arthritis a vegan an gluten-free diet and 28 a non-vegan diet for at least three months.

The vegan diet contained vegetables, root vegetables, nuts, fruits, buckwheat, millet, corn, rice and sunflower seeds and omitted gluten – which can be found in a wide range of products including cakes, biscuits, pasta, beer and bread. The non-vegan diet was made up from all food groups.

The result, published yesterday in the journal Arthritis Research and Therapy, showed a decrease in the total level of cholesterol and in levels of the "bad" cholesterol LDL among those on a vegan diet.

There was also an increase in levels of natural protective antibodies and a reduction in Body Mass Index. The diet in the control group did not significantly affect cholesterol.

PETA FILES NOTICE AGAINST OIL COMPANIES FOR ABUSING BULLOCKS

(PETA) has filed notice against two oil companies whose dealers have been observed using bullocks to pull heavy kerosene tankers through the streets of Mumbai in apparent violation of federal and state laws. Transporters contracted by Hindustan Petroleum and India Oil corporations have permanently stationed the bullocks on the main street opposite the Shiwari Railway Station in Mumbai in all weather extremes without shelter. When the animals aren't pulling the tankers, they are tethered amid heaps of dung and urine-soaked muck and are not receiving adequate food and water.the animals are stationed on pavement and forced to live in their own filth, the oil companies could also be in violation of this act for posing a threat to human health and denying pedestrians unfettered access to walkways.

"These animals aren't even supposed to be in Mumbai – let alone the victims of abuse by Hindustan Petroleum and India Oil", says PETA India Chief Functionary Anuradha Sawhney. "We're calling on both companies to stop using bullocks to draw heavy kerosene tankers and otherwise abusing these animals in what appears to be a clear violation of animal protection legislation."

VICTORY FOR ANIMALS: MADHYA PRADESH BANS BUFFALO FIGHTS

After learning that buffalo are being forced to participate in fights until they are bloody, injured and exhausted, PETA sent an urgent letter to Shri. Shivraj Singh Chouhan, Honourable Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh, asking that the fights be stopped. The Animal Husbandry Department immediately directed the district administration to intercede to stop the illegal fights, in which countless bulls suffer and die.
"It is sad that these animals are made to suffer in the name of 'entertainment'", says PETA India campaigns coordinator Sachin Bangera. "You can see fear and confusion in the eyes of the buffalo as they try to flee."

PETA's proud victory !!

Succumbing to PETA’s pressure, the West Bengal Board of Secondary Education (WBBSE) has made changes in the syllabus of Life Science for Class VI students.

Class VI textbook—Elements of General Science—encouraged children to do cruel things against animals like experiments including suffocating guinea pigs to understand the importance of air, not giving water to birds to understand the need of water for sustaining life.

PETA India’s Dharmesh Solanki alleged that these activities are in contravention to Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act. PETA lobbied by writing a letter to the Union Human Resource Development Minister, Arjun Singh. Finally, the board ordered the modification in the syllabus .
